Now, THE SWORD OF EDEN is by no means risqué, edgy, nor vulgar. I would characterize THE SWORD OF EDEN as a Christian version of a typical Marvel comic book from the 1980s. There’s some super-hero violence, but nothing gratuitous.
Still, I have had Christian bookstores pass on THE SWORD OF EDEN and telling me that the graphic novel was “too intense.”
Or as one of the largest Christian bookstores told me:
“I was able to finish reading your book over the weekend. I just want to start off by saying well done. I really enjoyed reading the book and want you to know you did a great job with it. Unfortunately, due to some of the content and graphics, I won't be bringing it into the store. There are just enough of our clients that would grumble about it that my manager and I feel it best to pass on this.”
Gutless.

What has happened to morality in our culture? What has happened to morality in our entertainment? Why do some of our fictitious heroes act more like villains? And why are villains and monsters in entertainment treated like the good guys? While teaching Sequential Art to college students, I often start a conversation about these very topics. I ask the question: “What has happened to our morals?” Not too long ago, one student replied: “We have none.” How scary is that… especially coming from a young person who stated it in such a matter-of-fact fashion?
Comics, Sequential Art, is a powerful literary art form. It has the potential to tell important stories and ideas. It’s a wonderful medium in which to share the Gospel.
