(Prologue: In February of 2020, I was asked by the SUNY Orange Associate Vice President to have a meeting with her at SUNY’s Human Resource department's office. I was scolded for being a Christian. I responded with: “…I am a Christian. I am not ashamed of the Gospel message. You cannot expect me to not be a Christian when I write e-mails specifically when I close an e-mail with ‘in Christ Jesus.’”)
I am not teaching this semester at SUNY Orange. I had asked the Arts and Communication Chair: “Is Sequential Art: Comics Illustration being offered for this upcoming 2023 Spring semester?” Her response was: “No, ART 125: Sequential Art: Comics Illustration is not being offered in Spring 2023.”
Now keep in mind, my class, ART 125: Sequential Art: Comics Illustration, continues to be listed in the student course catalogue for both Fall and Spring semesters.
Two weeks ago, while stopping by the adjunct faculty office, I noticed my personal things had gone missing.
I sent SUNY and SUNY Orange an email that stated in part: “Some of the misplaced items include some of my original comic book artwork (which is worth hundreds of dollars), original artwork belonging to several students (who, I imagine, would consider their work to be priceless), as well as items belonging to the School of Visual Arts (which SVA had entrusted SUNY Orange and myself to keep safe). If you could let me know where these items were moved to, I would appreciate it.”
The SUNY Orange president got back to me: “Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention. You'll receive specific follow up from SUNY Orange during the work week.”
This morning, I received the following in an email from the SUNY Orange Vice President of Academic Affairs: “Please note that the College has followed up on your inquiry regarding items you believe to have been moved from the adjunct office in Harriman Hall. The College has completed a review of the relevant spaces in Harriman and found no evidence of the items you referenced. [The] Director of Security, will be in touch with you this week to arrange for you to return your College key(s) and building access card(s).”
I responded with:
“I realize that my personal items are no longer in Harriman Hall. I was asking what had happened to them.
Did this review actually discover what had happened to my personal belongings, the students’ artwork, as well as the items belonging to SVA? Has anyone in the Arts and Communications department, anyone who had access to the Harriman Hall adjunct office ever been asked about the whereabouts of these items? Someone must know where they have gone.
Initially, I had been asking about my personal things that have gone missing. Now, I am being asked to hand over my keys? I haven’t resigned from SUNY Orange. (I started teaching at SUNY Orange in 2010.) Have I been fired? No one at SUNY Orange has told me so. I never received a letter of termination.
Forgive me for saying so, but none of this seems very professional.
Grace and Peace.
Solus Christus.
in Christ Jesus,
Al Nickerson

What has happened to morality in our culture? What has happened to morality in our entertainment? Why do some of our fictitious heroes act more like villains? And why are villains and monsters in entertainment treated like the good guys? While teaching Sequential Art to college students, I often start a conversation about these very topics. I ask the question: “What has happened to our morals?” Not too long ago, one student replied: “We have none.” How scary is that… especially coming from a young person who stated it in such a matter-of-fact fashion?
Comics, Sequential Art, is a powerful literary art form. It has the potential to tell important stories and ideas. It’s a wonderful medium in which to share the Gospel. THE SWORD OF EDEN graphic novel series allows me the opportunity to create Christian content that Christian readers can enjoy without feeling insulted or feel as if they are compromising ...
